There Is Anger In UNN

Recently, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka was commended by the Senate Committee on education for its giant strides in infrastructural development. But that is not the end of the story because there is anger in the land!

A visit to the Univeristy campus in Nsukka will obviously validate the Senate Committee on education's claims as road networks, lecture theatres, office buildings among others are sprouting across the length and breadth of the campus. As welcoming as these developments may be, they however come at the expense of the poor students who have been subjected to exorbitant fees all in the name of raising funds to execute these motley of projects.

There is anger in the land!
Last week, I went to get my transcripts only to be told that the same transcripts that were processed for anything between #4000-#5000 last year has now sky-rocketed to an outrageous sum of 15,000 for schools within Nigeria and 35,000 for foreign schools. This is by far the highest one can pay to get transcripts in any Nigerian Federal University.

There is anger in the land!
Not only are students made to pay outrageous fees but quite saddening is the fact that students don't usually get value for their money in relations to these services they hugely paid for. Take for instance, each student of UNN paid a whooping sum of #12,000 for Wi-Fi internet access but the internet services are not readily available nor accessible from the classrooms, hostels and most part of the campus. As a result, student cramp with their laptops in front of the Princess Alexandria hall where the Wi-fi signal strength is believed to be strong due to its proximity to the University's MIS unit.

There is anger in the land.
Pictured below are students in front of the Princess Alexandria hall frenetically scrambling for internet services with their laptops and smart phones even after they have paid a whooping #12,000 each. From my interactions with the students, one thing is clear: There is anger in the land!
